MY ESSAY
Process Writing
Kitchen Utensils
What is the purpose of sketching something? Sketching is defined as a rough drawing that represents the chief features of an object or scene. The dominant use of sketching is to allow students in my FNBE course to be inspired and to develop their own creativities and thus, understanding how architecture of building is created. There are numerous kitchen utensils that have been discovered including the fork and spoon we use to eat in our daily lives. It would be very difficult if we don’t have them today. Therefore, the topic here today is kitchen utensils.
Out of all the kitchen utensils I could choose, I chose chef’s knife which is commonly used not only in the western countries, but also in most Asian countries. A chef’s knife has a grey-metallic colour on its long blade which is made of stainless steel. The metal in between its handle is called the tang which offers better balance to the whole structure of the knife. The end of the blade is very sharp. It is dangerous as you can cut yourself if you’re not careful. The surface of the blade of the knife is shiny, cold and metallic. Well, you cannot really taste, hear or smell the chef’s knife or any other kitchen tool. However, you can touch it to feel its texture or observe it with your eyes tentatively. Nowadays, the chef’s knife is a basic kitchen tool for most kitchen household. It can be used for everything from chopping meats to slicing fruits and vegetable. Besides, with its fine features, a chef’s knife is very suitable as a mincing device. This simple kitchen tool makes the life of our people easier. I chose this kitchen tool as I believe that it is one of the most useful kitchen utensil in the kitchen. It had brought a myriad of advantage to our lives than disadvantages.
What are the drawing tools needed to sketch the kitchen utensil? That’s simple. We just need to use a 2B pencil. Shading the sketch is a whole other story. You would need proper shading skills to showcase its shiny character, not to mention to make the drawing look as real as possible. Shading an object will ensure a realistic and three dimensional feel to your drawing which will look nicer than an actual two dimensional drawing. A 2B pencil is a soft and dark pencil which is usually used in shading and outlining. It needs to be sharpened frequently when the pencil is blunt to show the shading effect. Light and hard pencils isn’t suitable for shading as it would not be noticeable and, its effect would not have been great. Pencil shading doesn’t really require any other tools. Therefore, other tools besides the pencil isn’t necessary to produce and achieve a successful sketch. However, it is still essential for you to prepare an eraser, just in case your sketch is damaged accidentally. Furthermore, starting a sketch was quite difficult for me. Hence, I needed to clear my work space to begin my sketch with peace of mind.
Firstly, I started off with a slight sketch and tried to draw the knife softly. I begin with the handle of the kitchen tool, and slowly draw the blade. After feeling confident about it, I decided to darken the outline, making sure the image drawn is two dimensional. I imagined the light of the drawing is coming from the top. That means the bottom shade will look darker than the upper shade. With that, I pressed my pencil lightly on the paper and begin shading, overlapping the shades. This is to create a darker and nicer image. Shading must be done with proper techniques in order to avoid dents on the paper. Dents on paper may results in inability to erase the mistakes you’ve made. After finishing the shading of the chef’s knife, I shaded a little shadow below it to enhance the sketching. Last but not least, I checked to see if there were any errors done. Fortunately, it was only a slight mistake, I gently erased that part out and shaded it again to the correct manner.
The process of my sketch took about an hour. It took so long not only because of all the small mistakes I made, but also because I wanted my sketch to look as realistic as possible. As everyone said,” nobody is perfect”, but you can always work hard and practice to achieve your success. Talking about how I feel after I complete the sketch, I think I feel good that I accomplished something after such a long time, especially since I am not much of an artist. I wouldn’t say if I like to do this again. If I were to, I wouldn’t complain as it would be practice.

During the presentation, I was fairly nervous. Speaking in front of the class really give me goose bumps. I understand that we are going to have more and more presentation in the future. I will try and improve my pronunciation and have more practice in the future. I feel that this presentation has benefited us a lot. Example, it has made us know our limit and skills during presentation. Besides, it has really made us think about the future.
