Effective Public Communication
PROJECT 1: CREATING A PHOTO BLOG
GROUP PROJECT
For this assignment, we were required to form a group of four or five people and come up with a photo blog that consist of about 25 to 30 photos about a place of our liking. We were asked to decorate the photo blog and write a 20 to 30 words caption. The photos in the photo blog must contain the following criteria:
- People – ethnic background, gender, age, description of clothes.
- Food – types of food available or food presentation at hawker stalls or restaurants.
- Activities – kinds of activities found in the surrounding of the suggested location.
- Cultural conservation on buildings – Façade, interior and exterior design of the building and ornamentation
Reflection
Through this assignment, I get to experience team work. I feel that our group did a pretty good job in our photo blog and group presentation. It was all thanks to our great cooperation with each other that the assignment would be a success. Besides, going to Brickfields have opened my eyes and made me see that people with different cultural background can still live in harmony in this world. Indian people there were friendly not only to their own race, but also to everyone who visited. Going to Little India had made me learn some of the Indian Culture. We had a lot of fun times there and also creating this photo blog.
PROJECT 2: INDIVIDUAL PRESENTATION
For this assignment, we are given the opportunity to choose ONE topic from the given FOUR topics to do our 10 minutes individual presentation. Mr. Ridhwan has asked us to do 25 to 30 slides each for our presentation which include sufficient words as well as pictures. The topic that I have chosen is religious building around the world. For this topic, I was to include (in my slides):
- the historical background
- the structure and layout
- the type of ornaments
- the type of materials used
- other relevant materials

MY PRESENTATION
REFLECTION
I feel that I was too nervous during my individual presentation. Eventhough I have prepared the script and had practice many times and tried my best, I know very well didn't do my best. It was like my mind blank out during the presentation and I could not form the right words. After this presentation, I realise and know my limitations of my presenting skills. I know that I need to work on it well so that I can improve on it. That way, when next presentation comes, I can be more knowledgeable and fluently form my words.
COURSE REFLECTION
When semester two started, I didn't know anything about EFFECTIVE PUBLIC COMMUNICATION as a subject. When I knew it was a core subject, I did not have or gave a comment. I was not excited, nor was I bored, just somewhere in the middle. I used to think, 'what is the point of studying Effective Public Communication?' Why do a bunch of Quantity Surveyors and Architects need to do with this subject? I was really sure that we didn't need this subject anymore than we need social psychology(but that's for another story) in our foundation course. Those thoughts remain as the semester started.
However, after a few weeks of learning during Mr. Ridhwan's class, I began to think otherwise. During this class, we actually learnt many new concepts about communication that I know we use in our lives, only I didn't know it was a concept then. His was actually quite interesting. He gave us a fair amount of examples and told us many stories and interesting fact during his class. He is also really funny, therefore, the class would not be a bore. Eventhough our table of girls were normally quiet and rarely answering Mr. Ridhwan's question, I know that most of us are paying attention. At least I know I was.
When Mr. Ridhwan said that we were having an individual presentation, I was really frightened. Even during group presentations I was not doing so well, much less think about doing an individual one. He said that if we stand straight with the right posture and eye contact, we will feel more confident while presenting. Before the presentation, I actually did lots of practice as presenting is seriously my weak spot. When presenting day arrived, my heart was accelerating madly. When it was my turn, I was so scared. I went in front and talk about my topic. My mind was blank most of the time and I did not know why. After reflecting with myself, I knew why. I was having lack of communication with myself and others. I did not communicate with my self, asking myself what was next to say. Besides, I pretty much avoided everyone's eye contact from the start(non-verbal communication). That is probably one of the reason i did badly.
This module has really taught me a lot. I never imagine liking this subject but I did. I will try to be more knowledgeable during the next and future presentation. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Mr. Ridhwan. Thank you for teaching us. You have been a great lecturer.
